Why did the judgement on Eli’s house fall on the entire generation?

Date preached

Why did the judgement on Eli’s house fall on the entire generation?

1 Samuel 2:22 -31 says.. If one man sins against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sins against the Lord, who shall entreat for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because the Lord would slay them.

To Eli the Lord said,
Wherefore the Lord God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the Lord saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed. Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father’s house, that there shall not be an old man in thine house. And thou shalt see an enemy in my habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever.
The answer lies in Hosea 4:6 (KJV)
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

How can a father pass on knowledge to their child if he has rejected that knowledge? It is the lack of that knowledge in both fathers and their children that disqualifies them from posterity in the Lord.

Wisdom is a principle thing. Knowledge is key.

It was knowledge that distinguished Solomon from Adonijah. Even though he was the younger son.
1 king 1:6 Adonijah had not been instructed by his father.

Proverbs 4 : 3-12
For I was my father’s son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother. He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live. Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.
